Directorate of Oceanography & Meteorology
Web Mapping Services
The Directorate make available a range of oceanographic and meteorological web mapping services and GIS ready datasets via OpenGIS® standards and ESRI ArcGIS Server based technologies. Some of these include:
Near Real-Time Web Mapping Services
Sea Surface Temperature
View an optimum interpolation analysis of global sea surface temperatures, provided as part of the Global High-Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP).
- NAVOCEANO (US Naval Oceanographic Office):
- via Interactive Map (OpenLayers - recommended)
- via Interactive Map (ArcIMS - legacy)
- OSTIA (UK Met-Office):
- via Interactive Map (OpenLayers - recommended)
- via Interactive Map (ArcIMS - legacy)
Climatological Web Mapping Services
Ocean Climatology
Online access to oceanographic monthly climatological layers of temperature, salinity and sound speed at standard depths as sourced from the World Ocean Atlas series.
- World Ocean Atlas 2001 (One degree resolution):
- via Interactive Map (ArcIMS - legacy)
- Maximum Significant Wave Height Climatology (One degree resolution):
Static Web Mapping Services
Bathymetry
- GEBCO: One arc minute gridded global bathymetry from the GEBCO Digital Atlas published by the British Oceanographic Data Centre. Includes depth contours, spot depths and a shaded relief view.
- via Interactive Map (OpenLayers - recommended)
- via Interactive Map (ArcIMS - legacy)
Data Management Service
Online Data Access
Online access to sea surface temperature and salinity data for selected locations around the Australia coastline. This statistical data provides monthly and annual ranges. Find the average temperatures for your local area.
Oceanographic Data Management Tools
Software
- MarineQC is an application to assist a marine data manager in quality controlling marine datasets. The application is designed around XML (eXtensible Markup Language) formatted marine data, which allows any type of marine data to be quality controlled at various levels from the header information to the observed data.
- MarineXML is a data format for marine environmental data and is built on extensible markup language (XML). The structure of MarineXML allows for complete encapsulation of all parameters and any processing or edits made to the data throughout its entire life thus making it the ideal archiving format.
