Navy METOC
Web Mapping Services
METOC Geospatial Services of the Navy's HM Branch make available a range of oceanographic and meteorological web mapping services and GIS ready datasets via OpenGIS® standards and ESRI ArcGIS Server based technologies. Links are provided below to access some of the web map services via various applications.
Our complete range of services can be browsed via the:
Or via our Metadata Search and Entry Tool, the BlueNet MEST:
Near Real-Time Web Mapping Services

Oceanographic Data Management
Online Data Access
Online access to sea surface temperature and salinity data for selected locations around the Australia coastline. This statistical data provides monthly and annual ranges. Find the average temperatures for your local area.
Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN)
The Hydrography and METOC Branch provides oceanographic data to the AODN as a contributing agency of the
Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility (AODCJF).
The AODN manages the ocean data resources of the AODCJF agencies to improve access to and use of publicly funded marine data. The AODN provides a national infrastructure to allow online access to the distributed data archives held by
the partner institutions across Australia. The AODN portal allows users to search for, visualise and download
oceanographic data, and is linked to a set of hosting agencies with individual metadata catalogues.
Geonetwork
Geonetwork is an open-source searchable geographic metadata catalogue. Most metadata records are stored in XML format in Australian Marine Community Profile (MCP) extension of International standard ISO19139 - 'Geographic information - Metadata - XML schema implementation' abbreviated as ISO19139-MCP. Datasets can be discovered by simple text search or by advanced searching through area, time period, keywords or 'Data Parameters'. The metadata records may contain links to maps showing the dataset's spatial distribution or download links to the actual dataset.
RAN METOC uses the GeoNetwork web application to describe its datasets, and the AODN GeoNetwork harvests records off the Hydrography and METOC Branch GeoNetwork.
Software
- MarineXML is a data format for marine environmental data and is built on extensible markup language (XML). The structure of MarineXML allows for complete encapsulation of all parameters and any processing or edits made to the data throughout its entire life thus making it the ideal archiving format.
